When you think of a wrought iron fence, you think increased durability and relatively low maintenance requirements. Both of these statements are true; however, don't confuse this with being invincible. Particularly during the colder months of the year, a wrought-iron fence can be susceptible to damage. Fortunately, there are ways you can safeguard your fence.

Perform A Thorough Inspection

Well before the temperature drops down to a freezing level, take some time to thoroughly inspect your fence. During this process, you should be on the lookout for any indication of rust development, cracks, or any loose screws. The harsh cold of winter will only make these types of concerns worse.

In terms of a crack, as the temperatures constantly cycle from below freezing to above freezing, this will only cause the crack to expand and constrict. This constant movement will quickly transform a small crack into a much deeper crack that will only be harder to address. Check for any problems and have them repaired promptly.

Wash Your Fence

Wash your fence before winter arrives. Similar to the above-mentioned concerns, leaving an excessive amount of dust and debris on a fence throughout the winter is never a good thing. Overtime, dust and even organic matter like leaves can cause staining.

These types of debris can also increase the risk for rusting as they can be harbor moisture. Rust can both develop and spread fairly quickly. By cleaning the fence, you remove these items. To clean the fence, use a soft bristled brush to scrub a solution of mild detergent and water into the fence and then rinse it away with water.

Apply A Sealant

It's also a good idea to apply a coat of sealant to your fence before the temperatures start to decrease. Think of a sealant as a protective coating that can safeguard the fence from a number of problems, including rust and staining. A sealant application can even help preserve the paint, allowing it to last longer.

When choosing a sealant, try to find a product that is designed with rust-blocking enamel for the best results. Typically, you can apply a sealant by using an application brush, similar to what you would do if you were painting the fence.

The more proactive you are when it comes to preparing your fence for winter, the better it will look and the longer it will last. Make sure you are taking the right steps. For more information, talk to a professional like Crown Fence Co.
